As if the rivalry between Dana White and Boxing wasn’t enough,Top Rank recently announced oVasyl Lomachenko (10-1 8KO’s) Vs. WBA Lightweight World Champion Jorge Linares will be televised on ESPN May 12th, the same night Dana White and the UFC are set to promote UFC 224 Amanda Nunes Vs Raquel Pennington.
While the most recent showtime boxing event between Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz were able to average close to 1.1 million viewers on SHOWTIME, the undercard for UFC 222 wasn’t far behind averaging 905,000 viewers and peaking at over a million during the preliminary fight of Mackenzie Dern. UFC 222 went on to do a rumored 250,000PPV buys and almost doubled the amount of social indexing according the the Nielsen ratings.
Also set to counter program UFC 22 on HBO will be a replay of the Cinco De Mayo PPV of Saul Canelo Alvarez Vs. Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin which will start at 7pm PST. Due to this broadcast the Linares-Lomachenko fight will be televised on ESPN with a start time of 8pm 5pm PST.
Once Lomachenko fights Linares he will have cleaned out most of the big names in his division, while Mikey Garcia is the most popular guy in the light weight division, he has recently been seen iwht Dana White leading many to believe he might get involved with Zuffa Boxing. Mikey Garcia has ben rumored to be moving from 140 to 147 pounds however.
UFC Rio will feature Amanda Nunes Vs. Raquel Pennington in the main event and a solid supporting card including Vitor Belfort Vs Lyoto Machida, Kelvin Gastelum Vs Jacare Ronaldo Souza, Thales Leites, John Lineker, Nick Hein, and Davi Ramos.
