Cris Cyborg is the only fighter to collect 5 major Championship belts including Strikeforce, Invicta, UFC, Bellator MMA, and now the PFL MMA Championships belts. While those are the only 5 promotions with a female featherweight division, the Thailand based One Championships is still considered a ‘major organization’ outside of the belts she has already collected.
After defeating 2x PFL Tournament champion Larissa Pacheco in Saudi Arabia this past October, fans have started to wonder if it would be possible to add a historic 6th promotional belt to her resume, with One Championship Vice President Rich Franklin recently sitting down with MMA Junkie to address the questions.
Franklin went on to say that at the minimum he believe that the promotion would certainly entertain the idea. “I think this is a Chatri conversation. Chatri and Matt Hume because Matt Hume is head of competition, but I think that’s definitely a conversation that they would be interested in having. It’s not one of those things where it’s like, No we’re not interested in that.’ That’s something that would for sure intrigue them, and I say that because as a fan, I would personally be intrigued. If I was outside this organization I would be willing to watch and say Oh can Cyborg capture…she’s making her way u p the ranks in ONE Championship.” I would be willing to watch that as a fan. So I think that’s something that they would definitely be open to having a conversation about.”
Cyborg who still has 2 fights remaining on her PFL/Bellator MMA contract has remained adamant that she plans to retire at the end of her ‘Legacy Tour’ which is suppose to complete 20 years of professional fighting. Currently undefeated in professional Boxing, Cyborg picked up the South of Brazil boxing title to become the Fight Music Show champion in her boxing debut in 2022.
What do you think? Will we see Cyborg continue competing after she finishes her scheduled Legacy Tour? Do you think Cyborg fighting for a One Championship belt would be legacy defining?
