Perhaps no one had more to gain from a strong performance this weekend than Manel Cape who could have positioned himself to leapfrog for a UFC Flyweight World Title fight with an impressive victory. All of those dreams faded away today however as the Angola fighter missed weight by 3.5 pounds for his non title fight.
Initially it was reported that his bout against Matheus Nicolau would continue however Nicolau later declined to accept the 25% of Kape’s fight purse instead electing to have the bout canceled. Kape revealed that he has been sick for the previous two weeks and claims that Nicolau refused the accept the catchweight bout. Nicolau has already defeated Kape via a Split decision back in March 2021.
This is the second time Kape has missed weight for a bout at flyweight including when he stepped on the scale nearly 3 pounds over for a fight against Ode Osbourne in August of 2021. For Manel “Starboy” Kape who was riding a 4 fight win streak this is a lost opportunity. Nicolau was coming off a KO loss to Brandon Royal after winning 6 consecutive fights of his own.
Don’t miss Cris Cyborg return to the sport of Professional boxing this friday, Jan 19th live from Pechanga Casino and Resort in Temecula CA when she faces the #3 ranked female boxer in the USA Kelsey Wickstrum as the main event of WFC 163.
