If you have been listening to THE BAD GUY podcast with Chael Sonnen then you already know that Chael believes that Kevin Lee is about to get another title shot, this time not for an Interim belt, but for the actual UFC Championship at lightweight. Lee who lost to Tony Ferguson for an interim title, appeared against Edson Barboza in his last performance and looked impressive with his striking, GNP, and takedowns. Now Chael reveals why he thinks Kevin Lee will be next in line for the belt;
“YOU GOT A THREE-WAY DANCE FOR KHABIB [NURMAGOMEDOV] RIGHT NOW. AND IT’S BETWEEN EDDIE [ALVAREZ], [DUSTIN] POIRIER AND KEVIN LEE. SO THE FACT THAT YOU MADE A FIGHT BETWEEN TWO OF THOSE GUYS, WHICH IS POIRIER AND EDDIE… TELLS ME…BY DEFAULT ALONE, KEVIN LEE’S ABOUT TO FIGHT FOR A WORLD TITLE.WITH CONOR OUT, IF HE IS IN FACT OUT AND I THINK HE IS GONNA BE HAVING TO DEAL WITH A LEGAL ISSUE AND THEN DANA [WHITE] SAID SOMETHING’S COMING ON TOP OF THAT WHEN ALL OF THAT’S DONE. THINK THAT’S A FAIR CONCLUSION.WITH TONY [FERGUSON] OUT, WHICH WE KNOW HE IS BECAUSE OF THE LCL INJURY… YOU THEN HAVE THESE THREE WONDERFUL OPTIONS. TWO OF THEM JUST GOT BOOKED. ONE OF THEM IS OPEN. HOW AM I WRONG ON THIS? KEVIN LEE IS ABOUT TO FIGHT FOR A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. HOW AM I WRONG?”
Lee who had a very impressive performance against Barboza is the only fight who is not already booked for something. With the announcement that Eddie Alvarez will be facing Dustin Poirier, it does not appear that either one of them would be ready for a fast Oct New York turn around date. With there being rumors that Conor McGregor is about to have more bad new announced, it appears as if the only available opponent will be Kevin Lee as Tony Ferguson is still rehabbing a serious knee injury which forced his removal from the fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223
