BOOM! With one major announcement Dana White has again proven why he is one of the very best in the history of Mixed Martial Arts when it comes to promotion. The long time MMA giant went live on social media to announce the addition of Kayla Harrison to the UFC 300 fight card taking place in Las Vegas April 13th. Harrison who has never fought lighter than 146 pounds will battle long time superstar Holly Holm.
Despite Holm being 42 years of age and coming from a loss against Sheetera that was eventually changed into a NC, Holm will be a significant challenge to Kayla Harrison and a noticeable step up in competition. Harrison who last fought at 150 pounds in a catchweight bout against Aspen Ladd will be looking to make 136 pounds for the first time in her career. A 2x PFL tournament champion at 155lbs Kayla Harrison did not take part in the PFL featherweight tournament after losing to Larissa Pachecho the previous year.
Harrison who had 1 bout remaining on her PFL contract, elected not to finish the final bout with Cyborg after securing a contract which already had the terms for the bout stipulated. Instead Judo Kayla will take her talents to the UFC in an attempt to become UFC Champion. Cyborg the long time MMA Champion had this to say about the signing, “She sat Cageside the night I Ko’d Sinead Kavanagh. I saw then that she was only using my name to build her brand and try to secure a contract. I saw in her eyes that night that she did not want to fight me.”
Officially Kayla Harrison did sign a contract to face Cyborg after that night, however it had a right-to-match which effectively took away her free will to make a decision on her own. The PFL did match, however the new contract no longer had any right to match period, and with the opportunity to make the fight under her own free will, Kayla decided to fight UFC 300 rather than completing that bout prior to any goals of UFC Championship.
