Jon Jones made history once again as he defended the UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 309 becoming only the third fighter in UFC history to win/and defend championships belts in two different weight classes when he defeated former UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic in the third round of his UFC New York main event.
After taking Stipe down in round 1, Jones went on to win the 2nd round on 2/3 of the judges score cards before finishing the fight with 31 seconds left in the third round with a highlight reel spinning back kick. With the victory Jones officially moved to 22-1 in the UFC with his one loss being a controversial ’12-6 downward elbow’ a rule that no longer exists in the sport, improving his overall record to 28-1-1 in Mixed Martial Arts and extending his current win streak to 19 victories.
Following the performance Jones asked for a matchup with Alex Pereira despite Tom Aspinall currently holding the Interim Heavyweight championship. The Co Main event featured Brazilian Chute Boxe legend Charles Da Bronx Oliveira putting on a dominate 5 round display over former Bellator MMA Champion Michael Chandler who fell to 2-4 in the UFC. Bo Nickal picked up a decision win over Paul Craig to move to 7-0 while Viviane Araujo picked up an impressive win over the surging Karine Silva at flyweight.
Cyborg who has shared two fight cards with the legendary Jon Jones had this to say about his performance “Jones is such an amazing athlete, a once in a generation fighter, every time I get a chance to watch him step into the cage it is a pleasure.” Cyborg spent time training at Jackson-Wink MMA academy in New Mexico the team that Jon Jones represents when he steps into the cage.
