Cain Velasquez is the former UFC Heavyweight Champion of the world and on Monday he found himself back inside the courtroom as the judge handed him a 5 year sentence for a shooting which took place in February of 2022. Velasquez who has been on House Arrest will receive 1,283 days of time served towards his sentence. The ruling came in Santa Clara County court in San Jose, California.
Velasquez pleaded No contest to the felony charges of attempted murder, assault and weapons charges from August. The charges were a result of an incident where Velasquez fired a gun towards a vehicle of a man accused of molesting his son. Velasquez accidentally shot the father of the accused molestor who was inside of the vehicle.
“Today’s results are bittersweet, we had hoped Mr. Velasquez would remain out of jail. However, the facts remain clear, Cain Velasquez is a good man, a devoted father, and a respected member of the community.” said the attorney of Cain Velasquez Renee M Hessling in a prepared statement for the media.
Velasquez publicly took responsibility for the incident appearing on Kyle Kingsbury’s recent podcast stating ” We cannot put the law in our own hands…I know what I did, and I know what I did was very dangerous to other people, you know? Not just people involved, but innocent people. I understand what I did and I’m willing to do everything I have to do to pay that back.
