Cecilia Braekhus first boxing fight in the USA could set up potential Superfight with Cris Cyborg

The bout was suppose to be GGG Vs Canelo 2 and then Alvarez got suspended in Nevada for a positive sample collection containing clenbuterol.  In the wake of the ongoing review from the NSAC Canelo officially removed his name from the Cinco De Mayo fight date.  Gennady Golovkin then announced that he would no longer be fighting in Las Vegas at the T-mobile Arena.

News out of Glendale is that Vanes Martiroysyan could be stepping in to fight Gennady Golovkin May 5th in California at the StubHub Center.

For that bout to happen, Golovkin is currently in negotiations with IBF about their middleweight belt and a mandatory title defense he has to meet against Sergiy Derevyanchenko before he is wiling to finalize a contract with Martirosyn.  Last week the CSAC approved Martirosyan as a viable opponent for Golovkin who is 37-0-1 with 33 KO’s.

If things are able to get finalized, according to Lance Pugmire HBO will televise the main event starting at 8PM Pst and the fight card will include Mexican favorite Roman Chocolatito Gonzalez and the USA debut of Cecilia Braekhus, the only female boxer to be the world unified champion.

The site of the StubHub Center for the Braekhus USA debut is interesting as it will be in Cris Cyborg’s own backyard. Cyborg has already applied and been granted a boxing license by the CSAC receiving a boxing ID number in the process.   With Cinco De Mayo weekend having a history for classic boxing events, the fight card in addition to Chocolatito is expected to feature several other latin fighters and will reach full capacity. Originally the May 5th GGG fight was to be on Pay Per View, however broadcasting the fights on HBO will give chance access to the bouts without the added expense.

Braekhus who was brought in as a strategy coach ahead of Cris Cyborg’s UFC fight with Holly Holm has said that even though the two have spent time together in the ring, that she would still be open to a fight with Cyborg.  Cyborg is expected to fight Amanda Nunes July 7th at UFC 226 provided Nunes can get past Raquel Pennington at UFC Rio. Realistically about between Braekhus and Cyborg couldn’t be promoted until summer of 2019, however the fact that Braekhus could possibly be fighting on HBO in the USA means things are moving in the right direction.
